what saraphina and I were in a entrepreneurial book club where Stephanie never read the right book and Stephanie was terrible at this book I really Su at book club I did not fabulous I'm what I just had a visual just had a visual proud of it I'm back I'm not dead hi hello I've got Selma Parker in the studio with me this morning I had my wisdom teeth out this week oh boy so I was not cute at all I my girlfriend told me Julie actually from the mashby Chamber of Commerce told me to put uh ice packets stuffed in my nylons and then wrap them around my head and you know what it kind of worked it's not so swollen so it worked out for me this week I'm still like super sore and my face feels like I just went nine rounds with Mike Tyson but other than that I'm all right and you lost all your wisdom girl yeah that's it what are we gonna do with you I got nothing left this is what you got in the studio with me this morning I've got Selma Parker and I'm really excited to talk to you about your entrepreneurialship journey we've been trying to connect and we just haven't been able to because you're crazy busy I'm crazy busy and you're you're busy in your business yes I am life is good yes and my business is my passion so it's kind of goes with the flow and I'm I couldn't tell it all when she walked in with this like huge frame she's got books she's like all right where are we gonna start the origin story of Selma good morning Megan hey Sandy Emily thank you for joining us on the show so yeah talk to me about like how did you arrive okay so I came to the planet Earth and I decided I'm going to be a clean lady pretty much it was like that seriously though seriously since I was a little girl all my toys were cleaning toys too funny I know and then when I went to school first I was in England and I wrote to I kept bothering my parents to to get the address for the queen because I really wanted to clean the castle so I wrote a letter to Queen Elizabeth and I asked to clean the I I got famous for that I even brought my my my picture frame how cute are you here it is look at this I was wondering I was like why do I detect a British accent here Selma asked the queen for a job how stink and cute are you I know I was determined that I was going to be a cleaning lady uh I would walk around with this all of the time like seriously it's from Windsor Castle it's printed so cute I am commanded by the queen to write you a letter she didn't bother but someone was commanded by the queen to write you a letter yes and then I was invited to the cast and at that time you nobody was ever allowed to to go even in the the surroundings so I was very a six-year-old very special how cool is that Megan says oh my gosh can I have a Sprinkle of your passion for cleaning just a Sprinkle I know I am passionate about it so any any party I'm invited to everybody can do the cooking just leave the cleaning because I'll just attack with a smile are you serious yes I don't I I did not get that Jean uh I am a hoarder and a clutter Monster uh I wish I was born with the want to do it listen I don't have your talents listen you can't have them all right that's it you can't have everything that's it you you have yours I have mine and so how did you go from a little girl in England wishing to clean Windor Castle to here in the US running your own business oh it's a long long story so anyways I came here pretty much by myself and I that takes courage yes and I was 20 years old I couldn't even buy a beer and there's no there was no drinking age I lived in Brazil before oh they don't care there was no drinking age there says what I can't even buy a beer what do you mean but anyway so I came here 20 years old I stayed one day in a friend's house that knew a friend than a friend and then I was on my own at 20 years old Meanwhile my daughter is just woken up today is her 18th birthday shout out to miss Lillian last day of school and uh I I don't think that she would have the wherewithal to just leave let alone leave the country and then just be like I'm gonna go see some friends and see some Life by very different times though so yes yes yes and then when you when you have all that courage and you're so ready to start your own life and you want to be away from from your roots a little bit you want to create your own Roots I think that that's what I was really wanted to to do and just you believe that you can do it and you're so ready no matter what your parents are going to say your friends and you're just like I'm GNA do it yeah it was not easy I can tell you that much but no but I'm here now and it's all good and it was all worth it yes so tell me a little bit about your business what what is what sets you apart from everyone else Selma Parker cleaning by the way if you're looking for her thank you I think it's really my passion for it and the way I approach my employees and my my my guest in general because we don't do it obviously I need money and I need to pay my bills but it's not all about the money and it's all not all about the dollars it's really making a difference and being an asset to people's lives really yes well that's it because when people are coming to you they're not exactly particularly proud of not being able to do these things by themselves they're like busy they're they're in their own profession trying to make things work and you're trying to make their life a little happier I feel like when you're in a clean space you can like breathe easier there's some relaxation that goes along with being in a space that is kept rather than filth right right but you know what that's something that we should change in people's mind that when when people think like oh I'm going to bring the cleaning lady in I have to clean up because the cleaning lady is kind of I always pre- clean before the cleaning lady comes don't I can't help it she people can't see how we really live that's do not because we actually prefer to make a difference then the house is already kind of clean and it doesn't even seem that we've been there are you kidding me 90s native says Selma good morning Cindy thanks for joining us Marley Beth Sherry hi and good morning on a Friday I've got Selma Parker in here talking about her uh writing the queen a letter to where she is right now um what is it like to have how many people work for you eight that's a lot of people to care for they are my angels yeah you really have to be mindful of your employees and the people that work with you because they're your everything right your ability to do your business absolutely and I think it really is when I choose somebody that's going to stay with me I do not choose their their clean cleaning skills by the way I I choose the person because I can teach them the cleaning skills this is really important and I think that that really matters it's got to be the right fit personality-wise and I say that all of the time it's you know yes we are we are always looking for help here but it's got to be the right fit of people and it's got to be the the culture that you've developed within your own business absolutely it's it's like we we already have a trend and we have to keep that up and only go fly high not when we're not going to take any step down yet yeah it's really important good morning Diane hello Thomas how are you today and hey Mari happy birthday I hope you have a great day hey Dave pagar thanks for joining us on the show this morning what do you think is the hardest part of your job to be honest and I have a problem with like chasing money like when people don't pay that I think that's my biggest challenge because like I'm I'm so ready to do everything else but then I have to put on a different face to that those situations and I was like are you kidding me we we went there and we you know we bring our own materials we bring our equipment um we have our labor and some people we need to chase down to to get paid so that is a big challenge it didn't used to happen as much but it has been more frequent lately yeah yeah well it's really difficult um it's an uncomfortable situation of every business right the reason why you're doing work is for money but so yes you do in fact love your work so it's difficult to ask for that and unfortunately I always expect people to give me the amount that I give them and that's never going to happen because I'm a spaz and not everybody can give me that kind of energy that I I expect from people and I know it's a lot but also when you're you know doing the work you've done the service and now you've got to be the heavy to be like did you pay me you know it's been a while and you know I've got people in Billing like that and it's really uncomfortable it's a sad place to be in your business and you don't want to be that person no that's why I have a billing software and I just pretend it doesn't exist just I will let the billing software nag you I don't even look at it sometimes because it stresses me out listen this is a lesson that I need to learn I have not learned it very well yet but I am learning listen we all we all have to learn something new every day right so that that's my challenge in my business yeah it is true hey Edward thank you so much he's like enjoy this great uh Emily yes you are the right fit for us we appreciate you I'll be the money guy heard you oh Selma give me some money thank you chasing people I know it's awful and Diane I can help her with billing I did that for 40 years I think everybody needs a someone that can separate you from that part of your business uh it's really difficult if you're an accountant sorry guys you already had your time of year though you got to deal with it fight for your money it's your livelihood of course listen the the the bills are not not paid with smiles I wish they were right because I'm smiley girl I am very rich I'm enrich in happiness no it's really true it's the ugly portion of the business that makes you feel really uncomfortable I did eforall which is a business accelerator when I first started working for myself and there was this money conversation and you know they had this expert come in and talk to everybody about how your feelings about money and like when I say this to you how do you feel about it and I sat there and cried it was like a full 10 minutes of crying because I'm so it's so it's a spot in my life that makes me feel so uncomfortable I hate it if I could right so I'm not the only one no no and I don't know whether that's a nurture thing because we're moms also like you just want to do the best you can for people and as long as you're Prov for you feel like I'm good right right but we we need to change that yes listen we worked we deserve it come on so you were featured in on Kate magazine we are such good friends of the Enterprise and we really love them if you're looking for new and upcoming businesses I really suggest that you talk to the Enterprise about getting your conversation out there familyowned family operated locally operated and all of their people are here and I think that that's really important in an outlet that giv gives information about Cape cotters that we're here I know and that's so special that we are like a community and we need to stick together you know like to to the the family businesses absolutely yes I was I was voted the the best cleaning service in the afate last y That's amazing thank you everybody I was not already expecting it really no no I wasn't because I knew I was between the first three but then I said um I'm going to bring all my girls right yeah so we so we we all came in and our uniforms are all pink so we all put dresses like party dresses but they were all pink so imagine all those wom in pink walking in they're like are they going to the Barbie movie no they're cleaning thank you I did get a lot of bobie comments it's because we were pink before barie movie came out that's it you were you were cool way before that yes absolutely yeah so all me and all my girls were there to with with when we heard it was us I was so excited that's nice when you've built this amazing team that you rely on to work with and then you can celebrate each other and that excitement yes and I think like when I was um firstly invited to maybe like I knew I was in the top three but I didn't know that oh so you didn't even know how you had won so you're sitting there waiting so I was just like well if I'm coming everybody's coming because whatever we was won I did not win by myself right they were all with me we are a team so no matter if it's second place third place well it was even better first place but we're going to celebrate this all together so we were all there and I think we shook the place cuz we we were jumping and screaming a lot yes that is such high energy you have to be high energy to do the jobs that you do every single day absolutely but you know what you you're so used to it you wake up and you're ready it's kind of it's kind of putting a clothes on and going for a walk for us yes yes you transform because we're so used to it so it it doesn't become like a like no dragon feeding no no laziness and it's not it's not anything that we would ever roll our eyes to it let's get it done yeah AB Diana is asking um ask her if we should tell them our cleaners what needs to be done the most or should we just let them do their thing okay so I always recommend that you Let There the communication is essential and I think that every house is different and every person is different right so what I probably I'm going to tell you a story here so when we come into the houses we always try to make it as neat and clean as if you would be coming home to a hotel let's say so we're going to put like little little things on your toilet paper and on your tissues and I worked with somebody for several years until she passed away and after I was already working for her for about 10 years she said to me oh I hate the thing you do on the toilet paper and I said to her Pat all these years I've been coming here exctly and yeah so communication is essential how easy was it for me not to do that you know what I mean so and then a lot of people also comment on things that we do and they love so we want to continue with that but everybody is different let your cleaning lady know what is your priorities and where she needs to focus on more because what is your you know your biggest part of that cleaning is probably not seen as everybody the same way absolutely yes let her know I think that I mean communication period that's with every job and any job that you do you need to know if we're hitting the Mark here yes and then there cleaning cleaning like a s like some some smells like what I love probably Stephanie says oh my house stinks like you know what I mean well my daughter is obsessed with that fabuloso and I'm like get it out get it out get it gone I don't like that smell so it I'm very smell sensitive and I'm like I'm hearing sensitive so like if loud noises and terrible smells I'm immediately like I'm gonna lose my mind but you see that's a big hit for the majority of people so we we need to know to be able to say you know what let's change up for this house and then we also have a green line so we offer that do not yet give the same results they're getting so much better though but we offer that as well as well as the the regular like you know well yeah because they don't clean as well as some other things so I get it yeah they do not make the the impact that the other one it does not make the same but you know what after you've done like sometimes with the regular one you can if you're just maintaining the cleaning you can absolutely keep up with the green one yes yes um my husband who worked in a service that was in people's houses almost every single day I mean it's really difficult work life balance is really difficult and then trying to maintain your home on top of being a mom and having a marching band in a full-time career very difficult and so I would get so stressed at the end of the day and I'm like I just didn't get to this this house ever I turn around and clean one thing it's a mess behind me and he's like you should see the houses that I was in this week we fine we're fine and that didn't make me feel any better knowing that somebody else was worse out there I I think it's one of those things that is really difficult um what is the common thing that you see with people that they struggle with and that you struggle with I think that mostly is kitchens and bathrooms like overall everything else like it's it's Living Spaces that you know that that that have been used obviously and need to be like maintained but but I think that clean kitchens and bathrooms are more of a challenge for people and I think they are more of an essential for the cleaning aspect because that's where we are eating that's where we are taking our shower brushing our teeth you know what I mean so I think that we we need we need to be more without fail my Portuguese father will walk into my home and scrub my toilet and say Steph what are you doing with these kids what are you doing with these kids they're not cleaning toilets dad well I taught my kids early obviously because I love it so we would like games of cleaning that's how you got to do it seriously gamify anything and you get it done but it's funny my daughter CH to clean my daughter worked for a cleaning person for two years and she loved it because it quieted her mind yeah she'd just get out there she knew what she had to do you know when your job is done when it's clean and then that was it it was like something that was really healing for her I have pictures of my kids like playing around with the vacuum that's it you got to make a game of it Emily said she the magazine is there something that like we need to talk about to know about you because I I want to hire you I don't know I'm just I'm just simple Selma to be honest I'm just I'm just a happy person chasing my dreams I think that my parents were very worried because I wanted to be a cleaning lady and they said no go do something else I went to to to college to in actually animal science like a vet so so and then I like no that's not for me yeah this this is who I am so no matter what your dream is no matter what your passion is go for it you will survive in this world if you do what you love the you know the earnings will come after it but do what you like cuz you can't spend your days sitting down in a place in an office that you don't enjoy or doing doing a a job that you don't like so my secret is I love what I do I love the girls that work with me and oh my gosh I have the best clients in the world I really do that's amazing how do people become one of your clients because honestly I don't know how someone has a bad being around you you're fabulous no I to be honest I did a I I'll tell you how I really started well I had a couple of clients that already knew me but I gave like my business cards in hands to people I never really started out advertising I do advertise nowadays and well it's really hard it's a different Beast right now to advertise but I really just started giving business cards around and I grew through that like people talking to people and like oh you should hire her and that's where it started so then I had my first girls working right next to me and and that off we went yeah it's so important to be the solution for people's problems and you definitely are oh that's that's special yeah it is it's a magical moment when you can help somebody be less stressed out so that's what you do for a lot of people and you take that burden off of them so everybody's got a job to do and regardless of what it is that you're doing as long as what was it like last year that I came that U me and FPS came on it has been a worldwin it was almost a year ago yeah it it feels like that because like my hair was shorter and I don't I think I had just dropped freak Show I think when I yeah yeah yeah yeah and what have you been doing for the last year like besides everything besides everything well let me see I mean um I'm now this much closer to having that bachelor's degree I'm this the um I'm like in like literally in the excuse me in the weeds of the of the spring semester right now and then next semester is my last semester and then I'm done um how is that even possible dual enrollment credits for college um that's that's how I that's how I managed to skip an entire semester um that amazing yeah that and oh yeah I'm about to turn 21 next month that's weird to think putting in the work I I feel like yeah as a musician everyone's like oh it must be so much no is so much work you are lot lot of lot of sleepless nights weird hours and and and also H having to catch up on rest is a thing that people underestimate to a huge degree please let's talk about that yeah yeah well because um there are sometimes where I just take an entire day to just nap yeah there there are some there are times where I actually literally have to where I'm not able to do anything I maybe like email a couple of people get a couple of things in order and then it's like right you know bed rot exactly exactly and then then there's of course like the 4H hour midday nap where you wake up at like 600 or 7 and feel like you just got hit by a train they make memes about that now or you feel like you're ready to go and you have two days now in one that's a fact that is is it's either one or the other is like very rarely a happy medium with that totally uh being a working musician just being anybody in the industry that we uh find ourselves in uh kind of crazy but you're adding School into the mix and still finding time to create stuff for yourself that is correct I'm not quite sure how I do it necessarily people be how do you do I mean it's a fever dream sort of actually I mean if I'm if I'm being completely honest I've I've kind of felt like that I've been living in a fever dream since I was like 16 and part of it was also like Co the um covid kind of like intensified that because like right when because lockdown started when I was at basically the end almost of 11th grade because yeah it was March March 20120 I was yeah I was three months away from turning 17 your senior year was kind of weird kind of weird very weird for like multiple for multiple reasons also just for me personally it it was a very unique experience because also when I was in 11th grade that was when I started doing dual enrollment at foras so I'm in high school in my last two years of high school but I'm also starting college but then kind of looking at colleges and then for the entire time from like September of 2020 to I'd even say like may like miday of 2021 yeah like I mean all of it kind of Blended together in in addition to like you know the the preceding summer that was you know 2020 the covid summer yeah all of that was kind of just like and and you know coming out on the other side now being like Oh I'm 18 and about to start college yeah well you know you were the first kind of group of people in Mash I think that started that sort of regular trend of taking some college credits while you were already in high school it's now become way more normal um than it ever was postco so it's kind of like you were the you were the practice ones we like let's try this out on these guys L liter literally cuz I CU I remember everybody who from from Mash who was in dual enrollment with me there was like I think um one of my one of my m one of my friends from music uh she was strings player Anna Joselyn I think she was in dual enrollment I know she graduated early she left the rest of us yeah she left the rest of us there and and I'm just like well you you you you you lucky you got to you got to go with everybody else no but I mean I feel like everybody's on their own development plan oh yeah that's a fact that's that's a fact you yeah you arrive when you're ready to go and I distinctly remember your graduation and how joyful your drums were in the mashby high school gym uh so especially this time of year as my daughter is about to get ready to graduate like it's just super exciting to have another Mash B graduate in the studio with us chatting right now and yeah uh you were I I just remember that moment of you being in there and how just yeah see I remember yeah my graduation was on the football field yeah about because it didn't it it like literally dawned on me like right before prom where I was just like wait I'm about to be done with high school I'm about to graduate and then it was like it was that partially and then like getting an email that I was in good academic standing and and like I wasn't worried about because I got cuz I was told like in the middle of the as I'm like stressing thinking oh I'm not even going to graduate the whole time you know I got the guidance counselor like oh by the way you have a 3.8 GP I'm like that's good of course and me I'm like well yeah of course I do because I mean why wouldn't I but also it's like there was so much stuff and then it's like on top of that you know I'm trying to do this music thing there's that and then like a whole bunch of like personal things that arose during that time and it's it's just wild thinking back on that time like so so many so many because a lot of the nights especially like between like January and March or actually January and April really I was like up late working on the senior project yeah so I'm like working on the senior project because what I did was I did an album for my senior project of course you did yeah yeah because like that project that pioneers and gymnastics and all those songs are that was my senior project and so I'm like up to like three getting in it getting in at like four and five some nights working on this was your dad influential helpful or did he kind of say you got to do this on your own he well see basically also a musician by the way yeah yeah f f f yes F say yes the musician extraordinaire and also another one who like does a whole bunch of stuff he he's Mr juggler right but um with um cuz with this project since this was like my second he help he helped me out a lot with my first and was basically like all right young Padawan I've given you the tools it is now it is now time for you to for you to flourish because um on like two of the songs on this album he and I collabed like he um ripped some keys on a couple of the instrumentals y but then like on the rest of it like on um pioneers and real MC's and something he helped produce those this is the new album this no this was the senior project gotcha on the one that on the one that's coming up all the Beats basically are me that's exciting yeah um we'll talk about that in a sec but yeah um yeah um P pioneers and real MC's and thump and you'll hear he's on keyboard but then like gymnastics that's all me another one that's all me and um this one song that I got called CPS that's also all me excellent yeah now so so the new one we'll talk about the new one the new album I've dropped two singles from it so far um freak show that one came out last year actually and projectile you may notice that's the new song that came out last month so here you are 24 21 years old and you're like four albums deep this is your fourth third okay this this one coming is my third my my fourth my fourth and fifth are in development right now okay so you're not you're not resting on this and you're not pulling a Swift putting 37 songs on one album which I appreciate n see let's see the the one that's been out for a while that one has eight this one coming up has I'll say nine yeah nine on this one coming up because there's eight mainly but then there's a bonus track at the end too so is it your style different have have talk to me about the progression from one two and three well let's see with one with one that one I mean the name of the first one was boom bap Jazz and that's kind of self-explanatory as to like the sound you know what I mean because three of the songs it's just like you know some regular you know boom VAP type beats like um like one track I got there is called the explanation that's the one where I'm talking I'm one of the best and don't you forget it step to me and you about to regret it I'm zyg don't forget who said it and start the beef we need to call the paramedics and then like on the second one on the second one I'm exper I start to experiment with more like you know modern sounding stuff with more like you know stuff with with like trap beats and things like that you hear that on like gymnastics and on another one and on um that one that one song uh Glory of History it's good you want you wantan you want you wanna you wantan to you want to hear some some some stuff that'll make you laugh and think at the same time listen to Glory of History it's on spotif I feel like that's the kind of quest we're all kind of on at this moment in time it's like just so sick of noise I want something that progresses and something that is giving me some knowledge and I I love the fact that you really spend the time developing that at your age feel I I feel like I'm I'm a kindred spirit with Kendrick Lamar in that in that sense talk to me about that beef right there oh my God I was I was wondering what I was wondering whether that would even come up in this conversation I mean obviously obviously I'm team Kendrick yeah obviously I'm team Kendrick I mean if anybody's talked with me at length you probably know what my feelings are about Drake I don't I that that part in Euphoria where Kendrick's like I hate the way that you walk the way that you talk and the way that you dress I'm like based based based based based and and and Kendrick gives him gives him more grace than I do because he's like I like Jake with the I don't even even like Drake's Melodies I don't I don't you how did you feel when he dropped a house album like you're I didn't listen to it I don't listen to Drake I won't do it I look my look my my dad my dad basically studies Drake purely from like a marketing standpoint abut you know what I'm saying and it's like yeah his mark his marketing's on his marketing's on point absolutely but it but that's that's the beginning and end of of my props for Drake you know he I mean he he has you can sell stuff you can sell stuff and you have a critical mass of people behind you who who who support what you're about yeah but I mean it's like ah man from ton I could just listen to the weekend I I I could I mean and it's like what's ter I mean Montreal better anyway listen to Khloe Doon you know what I'm saying you're evil yeah why were you in Canada recently um cuz it's fun cuz we like Canada um CU I have no issue my have family in Canada I find myself there often but yeah yeah I was just like what is Zig doing okay he's got a gig maybe he's got some friends maybe's just having fun yeah I mean we're trying to find some we did we did this two Christmases in a row um Christmas of 2022 going into 2023 uh me pops and Grandma went up to Montreal that's fun and what we did was we saw we saw some stuff looked at some stuff took some pictures um rang in the New Year the drinking age is 19 in Canada so basically we went bar hopping to with your grandma well I mean one one night one night with Grandma one night just me and Pops um and then uh let's see we found a couple of open mics performed there and of course we brought we brought the music equipment up so that was when Pop started working on his thunderchild album were people like blown away they're like why seriously an open Bic like if you both rolled up at an open Bic that I was totally unsuspecting I wouldn't leave I would be following you guys I'm like I'm your new now best friend I will follow you everywhere that that's that's the effect that I hope to have on every that's a treat though because you guys are just so musically inclined your dad just started playing guitar for the first time ever and here you are working on your now cuz I'm CU I'm like I've been I've been like keeping a calendar of how long he's been at the guitar because he F because I remember he first started at the beginning of 2022 because like it's funny how I have like different time landmarks for when things happen well obviously everyone remembers things differently yeah because I remember his fir yeah his first time doing a live performance with the guitar he was only like I think a month and a half deep with learning it because we were out we're out at UMass doing uh doing this um this they had us for Black History Month and it it was the setup where it was me on we had this percussion box I think you saw it at um at Chase's birthday it's called a coone love it the one where you sit on and it has around here somewhere somewhere yeah well you know what I'm talking about then so I'm on kahol pops is on Guitar and uh we brought chuck with us to play Bas so that was that was the setup and and yeah pops killed it so is now uh two and a half years that's the he's now two and a half years deep on the guitar and and he's ripping Santan like it's that's it's pretty sick that is that is that is yes that's a fact
