we're doing this we're here finally we're making it work hi good morning everyone I am Stephanie Bieber joined by Laura imhoff and uh she is a Creator I was so excited when you finally got you had been reaching out to me and it was just crazy points and then I finally I was like wait a minute I haven't connected with Laura I started doing some markets some makers markets and I was like I really wanted to talk to you because both of us are for all graduates hi good morning everyone thank you for joining us and uh I I absolutely love everything that you do so welcome thank you it's so good to be here I know that you're not exactly right over the bridge you had quite a time getting in today that's a slight commute but I do like a good morning drive but you're not that far away uh it depends on traffic apparently on a good day it's about an hour and a half you're in the Ipswich area yeah I live in Boxford which is kind of a 95 next to Topsfield Andover morning rtb so um yeah and I love being on the cape though any chance I can get it yeah for sure I mean I feel like they're very similar but they're also just I don't know a little different yes they are very different you got good clams though we'll give you that and what a season I was just I just learned that the even the rain I'm sorry I get really nervous no please get nerdy do it rain has been affecting a lot of the seafood in the end yeah I look in Ipswich yeah yeah so that's exciting no it is though because the food's really good right now and I can't keep my hands off of it apparently so I got a basket of fried clams oh yes I'm so jealous that's one food I have not gotten into this season had my lobster roll check that off yes saw that you did too because I was like stalking her on social yesterday I was like oh a martini and a lobster roll we're gonna be best friends I have to start the season every year at the deck with a lobster roll perfect Lobster that's it you gotta say it right I gotta thank our sponsors Rocklin trust make sure you go out and grab your lemonade stand kits they have them at each and every Rockland Trust that is going to benefit Tommy's place and also uh we have got retaining things he is the paver King he will fix it for you Bruno I want a fire pit there it's done so give them a buzz uh so Laura imhoff has got her business that you did E for all for which was roots and Spoon yes so please talk about your business first oh I think because that's where we became friends that's right we had our Mentor inter like speed dating um event and that's where we met um but yeah I got accepted into the Cape Cod uh efrall with roots and Spoon oh gosh if Kai's listening she's gonna I know yeah move into the mic a little bit closer um Kai's gonna get you I know right I don't have my statement memorized completely don't even worry about it I provide a fresh and flavorful small batch jams pickles relishes and chutneys all sorts from seasonal and local produce so I even put the name of the farm on the back of every jar I love that yeah I love it too and it's been really great as summer is ramping up I've just been kind of networking with different farmers markets and different farmers and um getting into summer produce too so I brought you some blueberry basil Jam to enjoy that was secretly the reason why I invited it I was hoping she was going to bring me wonderful treats how did you get into this where did this become because I know you're a musician and we'll get to that part because I definitely want to play some of your stuff and I was listening to songboard last night and I saw that that you were working on maybe a possible fall album so we'll get to that portion of you and we're going to mix these in seamlessly and this is going to be your new life Laura we're gonna do it I love it yes so yes I found you during an e for all speed dating moment and I was really intrigued by what you were doing and I think we all had our pandemic moment where we're gonna be like I'm gonna make bread I'm gonna do this thing and is that where it came from your pandemic moment or was it before that way before awesome I actually used to hate pickles laws for reaction um yeah really I know right here I am Dave Wiseman well said yeah and um yeah so but in college my grandmother had given me a jar of her bread and butter pickles I was like I can get back different right because I'm not a pickle person per se how do you like that um but I do like some good bread and butter pickles so I started making those and um and or I'm sorry she started sending them to me because I lived in Boston she lived on the cape uh in Barnstable and then I moved down to Texas in 2008 to pursue music and I said oh nana will you ship me more pickles she said huh no I'll ship you the recipe you're on your own kid but I like her in her sweet little southern Texas accent um and so I learned how to can on my own you know um it's an art it is uh and and I self-taught and I was like oh well I guess I'll try Jam um and it just spiraled out of control from there um and I did a Kickstarter in 2014 for my business at the time made by Laura Lee where I did like embroidery and I refinished furniture kind of like Martha Stewart without the felony um I mean I don't know it did great things for her career maybe she was on time right just a light light white collar crime just a small one just get my name on the board right we'll be taking suggestions in the comment section just drop it drop it in the chat um and so yeah I started doing that I was still playing music um and then when I moved back up here after well I say after the pandemic but in end of 2020 um I uh was managing a couple of different or working with different farms in the area and was like well made by Laura Lee sounds very Southern yeah and did not catch up here um so I switched over to roots and Spoon and really focused on the canning element um because that was the most popular because who doesn't love to eat right um and yeah and that's and so I've been working with local farms and then really kind of ramping up um my flavor Pro you know different flavor profiles but the orange in time pickles beets golden beets is kind of what really set everything because they're pretty to look at yes they're beautiful and they're also delicious um I should have brought you a jar I wasn't thinking I just had to like I'm just gonna have to find you at one of your 87 farmers markets that you have this summer I will find you don't worry my laughter just turns to tears right seriously so talk about that because I think we're all in the the flux of it right now um summer gets wild around here in the New England area just because our nice weather is so small our window is very short so to get it all in and be prepared and and run that business and then be at all the places so that you get your name out there and so that people get your product and then you also sell things and then you get a good night's sleep and then you try and function as a human being honestly I was having this moment of like I need balance in my life last night as I was carrying 47 items from my vehicle into the house because my kids walked in with like a straw and they're like my back hurts my feet hurt I'm like yep I've got that too so I've got the family on top of all of the things that I want to be I don't know I don't know how so many entrepreneurs do it I'm I'm single I don't have children I don't even have pet I I just and I can't I don't know how people do it with families I yeah just props props to you and yeah it's just like getting hit with a wave you know when you're like not that far into the ocean and you just keep getting knocked back yeah like all right I'm gonna keep trying this eventually I'll get out to Surf I'm just waiting on that moment yeah we'll be there so you you started this and when do you say that you really kind of what made you go to ephrill was it the money aspect you were like maybe I can get a couple of bucks and get this for my business or do you feel like you had something alert like what was it was the Allure I love working for myself yeah um I and I that was see and I hated motivation oh no I hate I'm just getting used to it now I'm on the other side but I've been a worker bee my whole life yeah so it's really hard for me to be I'm I'm definitely a self-starter that's not the problem for me it's just like and okay I did it now what I'm such a team player but I don't have a team I'm kind of very lost so that's what drove me to e for all was to kind of find a team in maybe some direction for me but for you what was the thing was the money I think everybody initially is like I could win money for my business to get this either way there's a new cohort coming up and a man uh Kai is going to be on the show with me uh Monday I think to talk about what's going on with the new cohort so I'm excited for that that'll be exciting I'll have to tune in yeah especially for the cape you've got to do it virtually so that's helpful a lot of actually every everyone really did it virtually it wasn't like they they made a special rules for me and I did come down a lot which was great um as I said I love a good drive um but yeah I was I applied to ephraol the Cape Cod e for all on a whim thinking okay I'm gonna get denied like and then I will strengthen my application for the one that's a little closer to me and we'll go from there and I was not denied in fact they were like come come we won't you yeah right um and so but yeah I knew that I had something this idea you know that I had been kind of working with for years and I thought well I've got the creative side I love the marketing I need a little bit of business structure and I thought that was really a you know someone suggested uh e for all um at one of the farmers markets I had been looking at and and so I you know and that's how I found out about it and yeah really glad I did because the community you know sorry the community within e for all obviously the classes if you haven't signed up you should definitely if you've got a baby business or you're just starting something and you're like what the hell am I doing I don't know if we're all for you yep yeah wonderful program so so you started doing that um rtb wants to know where did nana go where'd grandma go did she pass she did oh um she's she's here on the cape still so I actually if I've got some time today I'm like oh bye I love that um but yeah so she I mean but she was in her 90s oh she lived a great life yeah she really did um and so I mean she taught you an awesome skill or at least gave you a good recipe yep yep I mean even even at her funeral people were like little old ladies like I'll give you 50 bucks for the recipe shut up serious not even in the ground yet now that's a family recipe I love that I didn't get the dog biscuit recipe though with valerian root I wish I had gotten that's amazing so that's where you got your interest and yep all of all of this fun stuff how how has it been branching your business what you started with the bread and butter pickles and then where'd you go from there uh I mean like in Texas I had all these other things going on but when I moved up here I said you know I kind of reevaluated just like okay people love the food part I'm sticking with that I love to eat and I've always you know I want a farm someday um because I feel like that's quintessential and I don't mean to interrupt you but that's so firm when you've got your music and you're playing music waiting for your crops to grow like this is just like this whole idyllic thing in my mind where you're sitting on the farm playing your music oh something grew I'll go can then write a song about it I feel like they go really hand in hand and then with roots and Spoon it's very folk music titles it is yeah I mean so a lot of when I was in Texas I kind of fell into this Farm to Table Community between the farmers markets I worked at a culinary school for a little for a hot minute um actually it was like a few years um and I realized that there's so much I mean you think about how we spend time around a table with people um and what are elements that can bring people together in and and and like really amplifying that sense of community because a lot of us especially during the pandemic lost it right um so the end goal is to not just have the canning business in a small farm but like also have like a plate a hub um whether you know with the farm store Farm to Table dinners having music events um and really having it be a place for people to you know come to yeah and be together and obviously eat yeah clearly I'm food motivated I'm like already thinking about like okay what's the next one but what's for lunch though there are plenty good morning Carol and good morning Lauren hi guys um so yeah that's kind of the the you know five five year plan yeah um until then it's a whole lot of farmers markets yeah like there's a lot I'm just waiting my feet into this we have done now three or four we've proofed concept it's going to get bigger from here not smaller and I'm really really excited I had a good meeting with a fellow um Creator yesterday about how we're going to Branch this and make it larger and yes it's a labor of love for sure but I love seeing people and what they do and having it all come together is just so magical no so that's what you like honestly I feel like you need to do the canning because you want to and then have somebody run the things so that you can play the music while people get to walk around and Shop yeah oh no it's not gonna be all me like well I think I can do everything that Gene is a little off like there's no like what's what am I looking just because we can do it doesn't mean we should do it yeah yeah um and so there's there's a little to work on that off switch of thinking I can do it all um but yes the plan is to have people help me so yeah seriously I'm very much of the same mind I'm like I can do that but I can do that but I could also do that what do I actually like to do I like to do a mix of all of it though that's the problem it's that is the balance portion which I was thinking about last night as I was all right I'm gonna talk to Laura and she's got this going on and she's got that going on but it is balancing the things that round you out as a human right as a human being you're not just one thing you have a lot of hobbies you have a lot of interest hi Rick and maybe you can meld them together oh Lauren said I'm so honored that we're a part of this magical journey thank you very much it is it is a magical journey to figure out exactly what you're going to do when you're a grown-up if you ever want to be a grown-up it's very much I have Peter Pan syndrome oh yes I still sometimes think I'm like oh almost 40. nah like that doesn't matter how do you feel I mean are you having fun still yes always have fun can you pay your bills honestly that I feel like if you're making those three metrics you're doing okay yeah you're better than most because I mean working in a meaningless job for meaningless situations to be a drone it's not exactly everyone's most fun space and not everybody gets the opportunity to remove themselves from that space that's true so I feel very lucky that I do have the opportunity to have you and have you for all and have a bunch of people get together and be our best collaborative selves yeah because that's really where it's at we need to start working together I feel like if everything that we're dealing with in this world right now is so divisive yep and I mean there's also the element of right like we're so fortunate we can stream online but also it also separates us too like it's such a weird that's not a full thought I do need more coffee no but it is yeah it is that's why we still do events at lemonade or we still go out we're out pretty much every single day people are like how do you do it because I need to do it because if I sat in my basement by myself all day I would go insane so I need to get out and talk to people and see what's going on in the world what's going on in your life so yeah we get to connect here because we've got a couple of moments in the morning but that I like to go out and see what's actually happening in the world so that's really exciting and we're bringing some fun games and some other fun activities just so that people can use their brains because everyone's always like will you do the radio show but now you're doing events and I said don't they go hand in hand I feel like you just need to have some other thing that you do that's not just your job and your family let's connect with people and I think food is connection and I love the connection of your music to your food and you've been working on some new stuff oh man yes um yeah so I I did a another wow uh kind of like a like sorry maybe I do need more coffee after this I asked her I know she I was like running from the car you know after the drive anyway uh yeah so I did a little fundraiser in the fall and to record at plaid Dog Studio in Waltham Mass and the producer there is shall I say a magician um some pretty big names have rolled through that studio so I felt really honored to kind of be accepted and um recorded uh an EP and we're working on the mastering of the songs exciting so um I will be sending that out to those that donated um fairly shortly um and then all the other the swag that comes with you know donating to a fundraiser um but yeah I'm really excited uh one of them is a little bit of an older song but two of them are brand spanking new fun yeah and I feel like my songwriting has kind of changed over the last few years well that comes with growth also right yes and definitely listening to some new music um if you I mean I've been like for example I don't know who you know who you've been listening to lately but uh Lake Street Dive has just been on like repeat for me yes I love them oh my gosh so there's a poster hanging on the wall kind of behind a screen all their autographs and I'm not one of those I've been in radio for 25 years I worked for iHeart media for a while I am not weird around Superstars and fandom and and musicians but when I got around them I'm like hey because they really love their musicality I love their Grassroots I love the fact that they'll walk into a bar and just start jamming out and playing like their music is not you're not Untouchable you're not this it's supposed to be shared it's supposed to be communal and community and they really I think harness all of that which is why they have such a community that they share their stuff with no it's very true so I definitely love it but it's happy Melodies it's a lot of musicianship do you know the average age of a guitar player right now is 60 years old that makes sense that that's it's yeah absolutely It's upsetting our kids are not picking up instruments and they're not making music the same way yeah they're also paying for gigs about the same as they have been uh good morning Manny hey JT what's going on uh yeah I think you know you're saying the average player has gone up well when you go to gigs as a you know I've been playing music in in the Boston scene in and in Texas as well um but when you go to gigs the people that are there to see the bands like at local venues that age is going up as well I'm just seeing like I can't even get like some of my closest friends to come out and see me and they're my age the people that are coming to see me are in their 60s yeah um so how are you making music for an intention span of a gnat right now um uh wow so I started like really I mean I mean if anybody that follows me online knows like I really got into like making the reels and like but that's not even about the music that's about just capturing attention for with a funny video clip 12 seconds it's promotion um so that is how I'm bringing people in and now that I've roped people in a little bit I'm starting to sprinkle actual music in and oh oh you have a voice you know like um yeah yes I do um so it's it's really difficult yeah and having overproduced songs not not the songs that I've just done but there are like very produced Radio Ready songs like having that to keep the attention is like you have to have it you can't not have something that's yeah you know like a tape when back in the day when oh I missed the days of tape not do you know what it was like having to listen to those things and splice them up I still have fingers issues because of all the tape that I did from real to Reels cutting them and splicing them that was still in my lifetime like my kids really don't understand the the level of growth of Technology from in just in my lifetime yep just in our lifetime I mean that's how I started you know when I started singing I used the tape recorder and then it was burning CDs oh my God good morning Kai you know and now I'm like what's what's next what you know now is just audio files it's all yeah digitally which is actually I admit it's very nice it is that it's faster it doesn't sound as good but where do you get your inspiration from when you're creating anything I'm always curious to talk to other makers about things usually like as far as music it's definitely pulling from Life events for me right like for years it was just like well writing songs is cheaper than therapy um facts yes um but as far as like food it's I mean I guess I actually still pull from Life events I know that sounds kind of odd but like I grew up eating a lot of like Southeast Asian flavors so like I pull a lot from that or like South American flavors you know because Mexico and Texas you know living in Texas and everything um so life events people and you know what what emotions does that evoke for me um I'm a cancer I can't help but um very emotional I'm keeping it together you're doing a great job Laura hi I'm so happy you're watching um this is awesome good morning Dave hagner thanks for joining us I've got Laura imhoff from Roots and Spoon she's not only a canner Creator extraordinaire she's an artisan and a musician she's just your maker yeah I am yup definitely yeah yeah and I think yeah absolutely I think that um more makers need to come out and be all of the things and you're just definitely a festival in a can like seriously though I think that that's what it's about it's about music it's about Community it's about food and those all do go hand in hand and I think roots and Spoon encompasses that really well because I mean when you get to the roots of things what is there is music yeah yep it is so what are we looking forward to you said maybe an album in the fall yeah that should be coming out I'm going to release it to the people that donated first and then it will be online um on perfect sounds so like big league for me um ah look at you International um and then I am let's see come on brain yeah doing lots of farmers markets um and and over the summer I've got some other big stuff and you're online you can buy your products online correct usually yes okay um I these are all good problems what I'm about to say but they're yeah that's it they're problems but good problems are growth problems and we like talking about them because we can fix them I'm in this like awkward kind of growing pains phase um I guess that happens the first two years of business but I didn't expect it to hit this hard but my product has been so popular I'm having a little bit of a supply yeah um so the online store is closed for another week and a half until inventory is built back up and then the online store so talk about your supply where is it that you are getting your inventory very front like what are you doing I mean well when I say Supply it's really a production issue let's let's back that up okay um but yeah the Seas the produce season is actually we were talking about the rain earlier with clams well farmers are having a similar problem with their food right now like right lots of rain is great considering last year was a drought um but the problem is there's been no sun um so one of two things happened things are kind of sitting on the vine going I'm not going to ripen yet yeah um and then the other thing is like you have strawberry the strawberry crops that just kind of went yeah we're gonna turn to Mush on the vine have fun yeah um so like I was able to get three cases of strawberries and make jam and then that was it that like yeah that stinks and people don't realize like there will be no local peaches this year because the frost that we had in the season so it's been a tricky year um but really what it comes down to is I um the my stuff has been so popular like making it as fast as I can yeah um but just to kind of regroup I closed the online store so there weren't any like sad emails that had to go out yeah um but I will have lots of like pickled zucchini coming up um the you have this the first first person to get the blueberry basil Jam this year um and lots of like a Malaysian summer squash relish is coming I'll have a raspberry hibiscus Jam yeah um yeah so things are things are coming and when the store reopens online it will be like Full Throttle full shebang very exciting good morning Laura how do you manage your time because I know for me I definitely have since we have so many hobbies interests like some are kind of spread a little bit thin I did hire two people I have you know I have people now and that is not really making my life a little less right now because of the training process so that's also another learning step that I'm going through we'll get there I do see growth in spaces that I can't touch so I will it will eventually pan out for me but right now I feel like an ADHD squirrel I have a squirrel on my desk somewhere to remind me to focus on the one task I know right that I have to keep on hand so how do you manage your time pickled jalapeno Kai is pumped for oh yeah it's coming it's coming I have like feelers out on multiple Farms like as soon as you get jalapenos let me know and you know those Peppers will come in fast be curious oh yeah um uh managing time um some would say that I'm not great at it depending on who you are I was proud of you though because I asked you for something you're like nope I don't have time right now this is the way and I'm like good girl oh did you yeah no I just add for your time for your time um honestly the biggest thing for me I I have like an old school date planner does help I'm telling you just people like use your phone like no there's too much room for error as far as like not saving it right for me because I'll be talking oh squirrel like I just don't save things so the planner is I do it both but usually it's it's my notebook that I carry with me wherever and I know I've written it down and I feel like once I've physically written it down I've made a muscle memory to my brain like we've made a tether here and I am going to remember that if I put it in my phone it's already forgotten as I'm typing yeah that's like when people shake your hand and they're like hi nice to meet you and I was like I've already forgotten your day as we're shaking hands I'm so bad at that same remember your face I can remember I Met You in 1984 at this club and you had a shirt on that was purple and I'll remember all of these things what your name not so much I've started I took it hey you yep oh yeah oh my God it's so good to see you now I've got my husband beside me because I was like um do you can you remember I and I'll say to him before we go into any networking anything you're in charge of remembering names and I will describe them to you afterwards just so I could place it in my brain and he does a great job it's almost very codependent and I have to work on that but right now we're building a lot of directions and I have to accept what I have sorry continue no I was actually just thinking of the scene from devil Devil Wears Prada where she's like that's so and so and that's his like mistress like you know like yes like name fun fact bam yes honestly if you get me with fun facts I'll remember you forever give me something to remember you bye good luck we started doing what um the person I'm seeing he keeps a spreadsheet in his phone of people's names like and I'm like oh that's good this is this is what happens though yeah we're just gonna talk about people space in general if you are a maker if you are a Creator you will always partner up with somebody who is analytical I don't know how it happens but it's a magical thing that does because you need it you need each other what were you saying balance I told you this was going to be this episode was going to be about balance I knew it because you and I are both very similar to so many interests so I was just wondering if you had a tip or a trick that you're managing your time well with I mean definitely just writing everything down yeah you know what the other thing I've got well meal prep is my other like secret he had that well you've got the jars in the canning situation already so it's just like Zip Zip plan the meal I've got it good because I get hangry very easily and yes once I get derailed it's game over um clearly I operate on food um but you have to you need fuel to keep your brain going so and learning to say no that's another way super hard yep very difficult but those that would be it I had an energy healing with Lisa Z on Sunday at my Makers Market I try and get everything in while I'm at the Maker's Market somebody just reached out to me from Cape Cod polished and I said can you please come to the next Makers Market because I need to get a mani and a petty while I'm working if this is the only I right I'm like everybody hides their stuff but I was like selfishly I want you at all of my Baker's markets so that I can remember to take care of myself so when is this Market this is today 23rd of July glad you asked no but seriously it's selfishly we have to stack uh the things that we need to do with the other things so that's how I have fun I've built my events into come to one of my events so I could hang out with my friends and it's sad but you have to stack your time like that or else you'll never see humans and never get anything done yep yeah and then you get into the what I do is I like forget how to people I'm like oh and I like I have this I don't know what it is right I can play on stage I can do all these things but sometimes I just forget how to people awkward and I'm opposite I can people all day but I forget the me so it's like I'm like oh wait I am a person oh wait I do have needs I forgot because I'm always just like what's this what's that what's over there that's fun oh wait I am a person I do thankfully I have another person to remind me that I am still a person so I get the opposite end of that so I was always just curious I always like to talk to people on how uh they're managing their time and what exactly you prioritize for your stuff what do you put first I mean obviously like meal prep because like I said like I'm so busy that stopping to actually cook is like really difficult for me and then if I don't I just eat a fried clam basket like last night that's different that's summer that's allowed I'll allow it um sleep I'm trying to be better about that yeah um and then obviously last night I slept great after fried clams and a cold beer ugh out um but yeah I think uh yeah just really and also I like I'm big on taking like every morning I take a few minutes like and plan out the day or the next few days so I know what's coming I did really well when I can like see what's coming down the pike if I you know I don't like surprises yeah yeah I'm not a huge surprise fan myself um they they tend to derail me I am a planner I know it's shocking Kai but I actually am a loose planner I have a map in my brain that is in my brain I don't it doesn't come out on paper sometimes and I have a very difficult time or rating it but if it doesn't go that way then I have problems things tend to get away from me they definitely do so I've been definitely trying to take more time for myself however I just read this interesting survey and people are not peopling there now they're calling it bed rot it's toxic self-care they're saying that people are like I need this because of me and I need this I'll watch this because of self-care so self-care self-care self-care and then they're not doing any actual care of doing things yeah I'm an object in motion stays in motion kind of person so if I'm I'm suffering from my bed rot days which I haven't fairly recently because it's summer and I'm busy but if I get in that mode it's really hard for me to get out of that mode yeah like I'm no longer working out I know that that's a thing that I need to physically do but I feel like hauling crap all over the place and all of my gear I feel like that's cardio don't judge me I got really busy and I stopped working out the last couple weeks and I went back uh last week yeah I did ABS they're still sore and I was like well all right I'll go back to and I went back in there and I'm like sitting in the truck on the way down I'm like are those back muscles that are sore see sometimes I need a physical reminder that I do have muscles in there and I'm just not like a skeleton that exoskeleton like a jellyfish blob here I am Kai I know I'm exhausting to watch good morning Mark good morning Melissa just because I'm all over the dang place that's my cardio I actually do need to start doing a little bit better self-care we're working on that I have goals I actually have two full days off I almost didn't want to say it out loud or tell anybody this week I haven't had a day off in um six weeks I don't understand so uh day off yep two of them I know I'm gonna actually be on this going is everything running I don't think this thing's happening I know right but I'm going to physically be away from all of the things that make me do this work in here it's good you need it like a mental break bad and we're going we're just I'm gonna get in a tube and I'm going down a river and I'm gonna sit there and be very happy in Maine so I'm perfect yeah I need it I need to decompress if they don't have Wi-Fi for a little that's probably better I'm gonna have an anxiety panic attack for about seven to ten minutes and then I'll get over it Stephanie put it down am I the only one that talks to myself out loud no okay cause my husband was worried for me the other day when he goes what are you what are you talking about I'm like I'm talking to myself leave me alone yeah no so many people so many people talk to themselves especially like in our I noticed that a lot of entrepreneurial folks we have this is a crazy crater a crazy Creator syndrome yes yeah uh yes definitely that's what it is yeah self-care is a business skill it really is so I'm working on it it's it's an emerging skill that's what I like to say for all the things that I suck at I like that it's an emerging skill I'm working on it right now right on top of that good morning Jackie thanks so much for joining us we've got Laura imha from Roots and Spoon she is uh just a fabulous person she's a Creator she's a maker she's a canner um so what are you what is your business your small batch foods that you're canning and then now you're not online you're just in farmers markets talk about your experience with your farmer's market uh well I'm very familiar I did a lot of farmers markets in Texas whether it was for Farms or my own business but doing it here is a little bit different yeah clientele is very if people like want to ask I love the interactions I have with right the whole reason we're doing this is community but like talking to people about food and the farms and the seasonality of their food um has been really fun and a learning experience for not only me but you know the customers as well yeah um so it's been really great um and then learning you know the different okay I've been paying attention um you know learning the different I've spread out my farmers markets okay so I'm not just kind of going to one area insane yeah and and really learning you know who likes what where yeah um is has been really interesting like some markets all about the jams it's all about that data yeah and then other that like one market it's like if I don't have my pickled red onions you're they're gonna suck why am i showing up exactly um so it'll be like canning you know I say small batch but like you know 30 pounds of red onions you know um and it's just you yes it's just me you don't have any one of your friends it's like I'll help you come and peel this and hang out with you for a little while is that a joke is that just starting me to laugh out loud so that's a no it's funny crickets when I need help but when I need to like I love this when I need to do like a food photo shoot I make stuff with my pickled yeah people show up to eat right because they make tons of food from right photo shoots and then I'm like well I need help I can't eat it all and like 15 people will show up like ready to eat which is also fun um but yeah yeah it has those moments I was in the Army I'm from a very large family I have always like what you're sitting there doing nothing here I'll put things in people's hands and demand their presence most of the time they show up for things so maybe that's what you gotta do work on your army a little bit luckily some of them I like my best friend lives in London and she's coming home oh yay um so like you know she's like I don't know if I'll find a job I've been like seconds away from being I got one for you I got one for you girl not a problem I can pay you it's so true though and honestly you're like we'll work for food and give me a little bit of bucks you know and not putting you on the payroll this is definitely under the table and I've got maybe seven hours for you but I got it for you check in with your entrepreneurial friends and see if they actually need help and give them a block of time you'd be surprised how delightful and happy you will make them honestly it was really nice and when they say no the first two times try again because they will say yes if you always say no oh no we're good what culture is that I feel like it's an Armenian culture an Iranian culture I feel like it is do you know I'm Armenian no that's so funny it's like denied twice and then you ask the third time to make sure it's actually facts that's so funny it is it's a cultural thing if anybody knows what it is it's it's like an actual expectation that you're supposed to deny help twice and the third time if they deny you again that means they really mean it yeah okay interesting I'm just still I'm still on the like you said the Armenian thing right who nobody knows of Armenia right well that's not true but yeah no I know but like randomly someone wouldn't just say that to you no I did not know that yeah but it's definitely well and also like you know I think a lot of women do it too not to you know jump on that wagon but and we're not sitting here genderizing anything but it is in our nature to be helpful yes and I feel like that is definitely a female trait it doesn't mean that guys are not helpful no you just find that we tend to be those people we care a little bit more or we care about your well-being a little bit more where guys are just like yeah well and then it also kind of comes back to that what we were saying earlier of like we can do it all so like for me it's a pride thing for taking help right like I can do it all I can always do it all I'm I am all that is yeah right but at the end yeah as I fall apart a hot mess yes oh yeah table one seriously though yeah so please prioritize your time if you're not check on your entrepreneurial friends um what else do you find is being a problem for you right now what is other than just like your time yeah time I just I'm as like I said kind of this like growing pains part like I can see like the good things like stuff is really start gonna start happening soon yeah but I'm still kind of stuck what do you do when you get so overwhelmed do you have like a good trick or you fall into your music then no um I definitely take a second to step back and so I'm very uh anxious person um and so I wouldn't know because she she walked in here like a champ today so oh what are you sure yes absolutely however you were hiding it you were doing a great job I would not have said that first very silently very anxious and like always thinking about you know like I think like most entrepreneurs thinking about like 15 20 other things while you're doing like three things that's regular um and so if I get really like okay heart's pounding um you know we're gonna lose it yeah you know gonna have a meltdown um I won have I drink water have I eaten Shrek check um and then it's oh you're good oh yeah no because mine's opposite I'm like I'm just gonna dig in harder and stay here longer and I'll sit here until it's done I like have to be my own mom sometimes like obviously my mom if she mom if you're watching she knows um you know what would my mom say to me do you need some water do you write you know do the check-ins and we all have our people that we remind ourselves that we need and made an impact so yes and then really sitting down okay what am I really stressed about here is it the farmer's market or is it like something like some and so I really break down what it is and then I go back to my planner and I make my list and like break you know the breakdown of the list and yeah start with what okay sometimes they start with the easiest thing but then sometimes if I'm feeling like I Can Take On The World I'll take on the biggest thing and just knock it out and uh yeah I think that answers the question right yeah um but you don't have to worry about answering my questions I'm always just curious because if you've got a better way to do it I'm all about it and I'm all about adopting you know those people that are like we've done it this way we're always going to do it this way I am not that person so if you've got a trick a fast fun fact whether you eat the frog or you do the easy thing first however it is you get it done I'm always curious so definitely let us know what you're doing uh where can we find you how do we support you how do we patronize you um let's see so um because you were hacked oh gosh right oh man talk about that a little bit because that's freaking stressful we have people that are cloning our Facebooks and Instagram as if life isn't hard enough being an entrepreneur we have all these ways we finally are reaching out to people they're getting our products we're realizing our customer segments now we're hacked yeah I was um I was doing some like work and all of a sudden I got this notification this is like back in February like you're you're signing from like Doug Kennedy says go Laura oh hi Doug um you know and so I immediately like go in and change my my password is like 16 letters long none of us remember our passwords I can't remember anything no and I was like all right well props to the person that figured that one out and realizing it's probably like a bot from Russia um and so I changed all my passwords nothing they put you through like this questionnaire of did you like this post did you like this page and yes yes okay that was all me not a problem fast forward okay it's fine keep my hands to myself so uh it was it wasn't until a few days later I posted a real and realized it was going to my personal page oh that's weird and um realized that whoever had hacked my page took my pages from me and removed me as owner so they had my music page that I had since 2009 my brand you know my brand new roots and Spoon page and then my made by Laura Lee page my business I had in Texas um but then gave me back a page that hadn't been used since like 2000 they're like here you can have it yeah it wasn't even I was what what's in mine it was somebody an admin to somehow I got put back on that I'm like they're good um so yeah so I you know reached out starting all over again yeah reached out to Facebook for weeks like daily multiple times a day nothing um and I even like submitted like this person is fraud like nothing no they don't care um so yeah so my roots and Spoon page I'm gonna leave it as the pride logo for now just because it is recognizable yeah um I might change it to like a different I don't know like roots and Spoon official yeah roots and Spoon official on Facebook my Instagrams are fine um and roots and Spoon on Instagram and if you're if you're into some new music um music by Laura Lee both on Facebook and Instagram and those are also you know music by lauralee.com and rootsandspoon.com um yeah awesome well we're gonna have to you're gonna have to send me the track so that we can play them here on lemonadeio because yeah we're all over the place I just added 500 new songs for summer stuff because I got so sick of listening to things I've got some foreign selections some fun uh folky good stuff so yeah we're always switching our uh our look over here because I get so sick of music and I'm always needing new stuff well I think some of one of it's uh one of the new songs is on oh gosh not band camp uh SoundCloud oh excellent well I will find you and uh her song song bird one of my faves very very good I still like it and you can hear that one on Soundcloud as well we'll be looking for you on Spotify Laura imhoff roots and Spoon definitely go see her at a farmer's market and we'll be waiting to hear some more tunes from you thank you so much thanks for having me bye
