since Christmas you even found candy canes in your bag yeah I was like oh who was I that day it went quick didn't it it really did yeah I know I it's been a month I walked up to Robbie who's back behind the bar today at knockout so we're at 13 Lake a their location inside little windy out there little chilly out there feeling a little winterlik today yeah and uh I was just so excited to see him he was like how was your Christmas I was like okay not long enough a blur I know and this past week has just been pure Insanity at my house I physically injured myself I just got over shingles like it's just not not going an amazing time and then you get the bills yeah right so fun yay but listen we don't have time for that today we're gonna have fun it's our Sunday Funday um and we have started a new thing here at knockabout third Sunday every every month is going to be books and bites and so we're inviting you to swing on through we'll be here until 2 o'clock today but put that in your calendar the third Sunday of every month or maybe you're an author out there and you're like I want my book there at nakabo and I I said to Ted hey how about since it's a long weekend come and pair your book we're both wearing the angry fisherman designed by my student Casey mwan who goes to the Pratt University very cool an amazing design school yeah absolutely and so I figured we'd pair that with some bites we've got chowder here and we've got the Cog Republic Cog Republic is here at sampling Bloody Mary margarita mix they've got some other sauces over there I heard colea sauce so I'm down for it yeah it's brand new I just tried it it's amazing the condiments yeah yeah so Ryan we'll bring Ryan on later on in the show he's here sampling what they've got going on over the Cog Republic because now you can grab all of their stuff to go and some small locations here on the cape they're growing you can buy them online and I'll let him talk about that in just a little bit talk to me Ted thank you so much for joining us well cheers so how has this how long has maob trophies been out now so it came out uh the end of June and um it's gone really well and I honestly I'm glad we don't have a band because I don't want to be played off here um I do want the music yeah no I want to thank some of the businesses first of all knout when what was it like last year around this time yeah when I announced the cover and knab about's been amazing uh helping me get the word out on the book uh kog Republic with uh Ryan um you guys have been doing book signings there too yeah uh Tom and Eric amazing um also the leide which is part of the the Cog Republic team Shelley hussy yeah love you sh little anchor Boutique yeah Ariana yeah she's she's been selling it off the when we say it takes a village it does it really does something about that palth Village though and the last two that really um Kathy hickey from daily Brew she's constantly putting it out there um Shipwrecked is another one and my wife is what other one oh grumpies how did you forget how do I forget Dave Faker because he'll make me remember yes he will yes he will um yeah our our first book signing was at grumpy aw where we had a couple of hundred people and it's just been when you say it takes a village it really does and we're in a new world with the book world yeah where it's not necessarily that we want our bookstores to support us right but at the same time as a local author you can be in other venues and this is proof of it and I just want to thank everyone on Cape Cod those businesses who have really stepped up and said Ted I can put it in my you know like daily Brew yeah my gosh I've sold so many there I feel like 2023 was the year of the solo preneur and you're just like I'm out here hustling for myself cuz you got to be yeah and finding any little witch way and to to get your the word out get your product out get your thing out and honestly I got to thank you the most because you've had me at all your events well I'm super happy I love supporting our local authors good morning to Danielle and sunny Florida I hate you right now she actually is a little solopreneur right now she does a nannying business because she's moming right now but she also has um the year commitment to Disney so she basically babysits your kid at Disney oh my God so smart I saw that and I was like brilliant can she adopt me making up a business model where there is not one like that is very very cool I love that solar preneur thing Emily thank you for joining us Emily might be coming on board to Lemon Ado in a new assistant fashion she just had a new baby and we love supporting families and people the workarounds at lemon Ado any which way we can get you out there doing what it is that you love to do that's what we're all about well and that's why I love you and Cliff because again it's not just me you have helped so many businesses and that's how it has to work for you know but it's awesome because when you reach out to someone and say hey I got a crazy idea how about this like hey Ryan how about you show up on a Sunday and show off all the c-w stuff and he's like okay and then he's like I'll be there Monday I was like no it was Sunday I'm sorry I like could you still come yeah I'll make it work and like that's that's the community that live in so we're always looking for ways to support each other which is amazing and especially in the winter you find out who your real capod friends are not just the ones that want to stay at your house because you got beach front property or can I park there or can I go I'm going to the vineyard Ted Murphy can I park at your house oh yeah I learned like long lost friends I haven't talked to you in a while buddy yeah they call me up it's like the road race because I live at the finish line of the road race right oh it's been a while man hey by the way can I park in your house could you just lead with what you need for me sometimes and then you can do the small niceties afterwards exactly good morning Rebeca thanks for joining us Judy and Matt thank you guys for checking in with us I saw the front of your house flooded again water y I think everybody was sharing their flood photos yes um actually if I have a public venue town of Falmouth can you fix Grand a what are you do it yeah there's a drain there for years it fills up and then the water comes right to my wrer shack and yesterday I had to take all the kids out of the shack as the water's coming in like fireman style like is it okay if I pick up your kid over this Monsoon that's in front Okay that I literally did text the parents before before I put my hands on your child to move them across a water venue that popped up here course then I get them out of the W like through the they're dry and everything and then they decid to like jump in the well now that's on their problem you know you got them over the h exactly got them over the New River that sprung up in your front yard yeah I mean I feel like that area in fou always get some sort of cataclysmic Ridiculousness because of the wind it was it's crazy I remember um remember M Michaels yes oh can you forget M Michaels her and what was the other one that they used to like just throw out in the wind tunnels Shelby Scott yes yeah like Shelby there's a tornado get in the middle of it so I I this got to be about 15 years ago M Michaels is at Falmouth Harbor uh like right up the street from me yeah and she's like in 20 years this will be gone and I'm like wait a second can you recreate that and stand that you're like 20 years later we're still here it's not great A lot of the time but we're still here we're still here we're still kicking so that's funny so you've got your kids classes but you've also got adult classes going on which I love yeah so I I taught at Boston College for 11 years creative writing and I kind of strayed away from teaching adults because I got have so many kids right but then when I put out mob trophies I'm talking to adults again right and my my thrill is getting people to write their own stories yeah and uh so I said you know what I'll run some so I'm gonna run some more um probably in March so you can uh hit me up on Dean rush.com for information on that but but it is a joy like seeing people because so many of us don't use the right side of our brain anymore yeah it's always the left side to make the money and everything but the the joy of creating has been put aside it Sparks that other side to do a little bit better I mean you like when you're building right we don't just do lifting with one side we have to do both sides exactly so it's like you really do need that to use the other side better I feel like and it's winter what are you gonna do maybe do a creative writing class with Ted as an adult maybe even thinking about fleshing out a book idea I text him randomly and I'm like I got got it I got it he's like we'll meet in the shack yeah good morning Mari thanks for joining us and Danielle said if anybody's vacationing in Central Florida reach out to her she's the nanny Jen we're on our way we take my husband I don't want to go to Disney I've been there a million and five times but my kids would love to go that would make me happy take them Danielle thank you I'll be pool side I I went to Universal I never did Disney yeah but I'm a 53-year-old kid though so I feel like I still should do it sometime once again that part of your brain has been exercised very well so talk to me about this full year of not hustling but I mean you're really putting yourself out there you know you bet on yourself you've published this you've got a great publisher right talk about Crow a little bit because I think people don't know that it's right here on the cape yeah cro press Mary petite um they're right out of barnable they're fantastic when they published me though they said we can't be under the seow can't have this yeah if youve read the book you know why yeah they said because you know we're uplifting stories and and yours is the darkest story ever I've ever read but she loved it so much she said we're going to create your own imprint which is dark Waters books amazing so I I tell everyone who wants to become a writer who likes to write other Thrillers because writing is not a competition you don't go in a bookstore and it's one book right so writers should be hustling for each other so if you want to write a thriller you might want to check out their imprint and we have some incredible authors right here on the cape they they come here to write they live here to write this is a space for them where they feel creative and unfortunately a lot of people don't have that backbone of a publisher yeah and we are seeing a lot more self-published books yeah and and that's actually a good and actually cro press has a self-publishing Vision so say if they do I hate to use the word reject you but or it just doesn't work for them right it doesn't fit the vibe you know what self-publishing and and this is what I'm saying about venmo's changed everything yeah so uh but back to the whole hustling thing it it is funny because I know I so many all of you have really been supportive but I know you probably see on Facebook oh here's Ted again publish you know promot you annoy yourself and there is impostor syndrome and you're like why am I doing this why why and and the whole thing is when I first got published my first book was the secrets of Belltown it was kids book back in the late 90s and my dad who was a published author I was like Dad no one's talking about my book he goes if you don't talk about your book no one else is going to talk about your book you are a business I know and I had to realize like I have to be out there constantly it's one of those things that I think we forget even though we're so consumed by it every single day and it's been a month it's been two months it's been three months I don't see results I'm not getting the traction that I thought I'm going to get you know there are authors out there that never even got published or properly noted until they die yeah I mean think about the amount of like you just need to believe in yourself and stay in your Avenue and keep banging away at what your belief is yeah and it gets frustrating it it is it does and fortunately you have people like my wife is I mean here she is on a Sunday she your best cheerleader she is um but yeah so I urge people I can't say it enough to you know write your book and then go out there and and contact other authors and say hey yeah and we have a Google form right now I'm going to be sending that or putting that on social media um because we're going to be doing this monthly so if you've got a book or you think there's a fun Cuisine that might pair with it or maybe your friend's a chef and you want them to be involved in this every single month it's going to be a new book and another kind of food or pairing and it's all going to be local stuff where people can just showcase whatever it is and maybe your book is set in January and or maybe it's set in February August and you've got this or that we can figure out the month for you and we'll continue to do this knab about has made the commitment to us this year to be able to help us grow Bravo for that in this space where a lot of people are not doing you know we've got our book clubs but it's usually the ladies getting together to have beverages with their friends very little reading lots of drinking fine to each his own however I would like some other way to get out in the public and swap some books and meet some new people um it gets real lonely here on the cape in the winter time especially and I think it's a great way to bond over a book or to just have a conversation about something that is not what the hell is on the TV right right or what your latest gossip is yeah or what your what is it oh my book I brought this book to swap I didn't bring my book to talk about it I didn't write that book A friend of mine wrote that book like I did not know you wrote a book know you all these years oh dad by the way here's my best seller like wait what what's up Ashley hey Lauren Cliff always like comes I was like is there something technically no one hearing us I was getting a little nervous what why is he crouching Mari I'm one of those Mari is part of drinking book club oh so if you have a book club and you read maob trophies and again it's not for everyone right I hate people like well my God this is horrible maybe address the name change why you had to do that yeah well um if you like anything like Stephen King style that's kind of what it is it's like a Silence of the lamps and Ted writ children's books also so we didn't want to confuse the brands yes so my my children's book name is TM Murphy uh I came out with a series of books called totally weird activity books with my buddy Mark Penta very cool stuff um yeah so that gets kids creating but then when this was kids are like oh what's this no put it down no it's so true so so they said come up with you know a pen name and I always like I wanted to be Irish but I didn't want it to be like Dean Al or something like that yeah I said something quick you know so I went Dean rush and I remember coming into the house and saying to my wife I'm like Dean Rush is here and she's like get away from me you creep weirdo so which I get a lot but uh that's awesome but I was like yeah that's that's the name and uh and so when this came out um I have done uh book clubs on Zoom um but if if you're on the cape get 10 of your friends together read the book I'll I'll come by and and talk to you about the book oh a secrets of bell toown she said super proud as a caporn kid that I I knew a talented local author oh no way very cool stuff Danielle oh wow very cool thank you thank you you that that meant a lot to me right in that that whole series and now yeah I meet kids all the time um I think I've mentioned this on talk about your latest amazing students yeah so Julia Cox took my class gold Globes yeah 12 years she took my class she just wrote uh the movie Ned which stars Annette Benning and Jody Foster and actually jod Foster's new show tonight True Detective tonight but um been looking forward to that yeah I can't wait but uh Julia did this she's getting such a claim and um I can't give away she's got some it's she's hit she's got other project that's amazing like invited to the Golden Globes After parties and like this is just incredible that yeah it's started the obviously you got the opportunity to to be a part of that success or to to support I always say I'm like Mr Miyagi you but um but she's doing all the Kate I've seen the difference in my daughter's not only Behavior as far as her confidence goes but also her writing skills develop over the eight years she's been taking your writing classes I appreciate you saying that because writing is therapy yep and my kids well and now my adults whatever's you know whatever they write in class I've never told you what she exactly and I don't ask though and I respect it too I know she's safe with you I'm like go let her let her do whatever weird stuff she's doing in a general answer there kids work through a lot of their their problems on paper and then they feel much better you know they get it on she's super creative though and I'm glad that you're an outlet for that so I appreciate that thank you thank you um so let's talk about what is coming up next because I just I I forget what movie I just saw on Netflix and it was writing that second book writing that next one yeah and you've got this one you spent a year working on it putting it out there okay now everyone's like well how you can't leave the story where it is I know I left off uh I have a lot of friends who you left the story in a precarious situation so I I don't know when I'll be finished with the next book because you as a writer you should never say I'll be finished at this because and also what what does that feel like when everyone's like what where does it go and then you're like oh God I have to actually do the work now it's actually kind of scary because I also have to make a living and to to put in the time at a desk so please write reviews on Amazon if you like if you like it and if you don't like the book yeah right give a five star review and leave no words you're welcome but um but I'll say this uh I I leave off where JT is in a very bad place and I just began working on the new one um because as you said like the other one took me 12 years because I did it on the side right um this one now that I have an audience You' called attention attention attention now I I have to give another one oh so it's not going to take 12 years but we're animals I'm not gonna promise when it's coming out but I will say JT's still in a really bad place after chapter two I'm working on this next one um and i' I've asked a lot of people because I haven't decided myself should JT end up with his dream girl Echo don't you like just gauging other people's opinions on what you think the story is gonna go it's it's really funny even if you gather all of them and you're like we're going an opposite direction well that's kind of true because some of the answers I'm getting I'm like wow I never thought of it that way and I'm like I don't know I don't know what I'm gonna do but that's the exciting part I also tell my writers never really give everything away when you're talking about what you're going to run right because the energy to actually sit at the table and write it's it's already been given out yeah so then you're like oh now I got to write it right so so I have this outlined pretty well um and I'll just say the Cold Case uh takes place in 1984 and because it's that was one of my favorite parts of growing off the 80s I know I know stranger things you know but you don't own all the 80s right CH been right 80s since he was born CH is the 80s well the the funny thing is um I my third book The Secrets of Kane's Castle takes place in Ireland the kids book this is way back in the day and I remember working on it and having my Walkman back then and listening the kids don't know the struggle listening to Kate Bush singing that song and I was like and I'm working out this chase scene with Kaylee and uh Orville and all this and I'm like running up that hill stranger things Dam you so I love stranger things and I'm watching it with my wife and that song's on and I'm like son of yeah I know I'm like no I had that first if you've ever hung out with Ted you'll understand that he always incorporates songs or or something into these memories which I love because it was so audio VIs ual for us growing up because we didn't have the TV program we didn't just sit and like absorb we were out there like making our own soundtracks to life it's so true so we do assimilate songs with certain memories and certain like I do it with smells or like weird places where I'll hear a song and I immediately remember a weird memory of like maybe it's trauma I don't know but we just remember no it is true because like um when MTV came out they they would do a story around the song so anytime I listen to a song I'd be like okay what kind of video would I basically what kind of story would I a great and it it it taught me um but yeah back back to music I mean it is like a time capsule because I'm driving out here uh I love rock and roll yeah and I remember my buddy Mike goes playing it almost like um say put a disclaimer we didn't do anything say anything Style holding it above his head and I'm actually getting beaten up by the bully of the time outside moris pond and I remember him putting down the boom box and turning up the volume and jumping in and saving my butt oh I was like I was like and just watching I was like oh my God no I was like this but my my old man told me right before this whole fight went down was he goes he goes okay if this kid keeps picking on you he goes you throw the first punch and you look for a teacher so he goes where the rest of the Murphy's where were those girls defending you they were a couple years older than me but I remember throwing the punch but I was also holding my lunch bag you know my paper bag and seeing the Apple go out of the bottom out the bottom yeah as I'm punching him and I punched him and it wasn't like the movies like my body where he's like you broke my right he goes oh now I'm really going to kill you and he starts beating me up and that's when my friend Mike jumped in and and saved me so I gotta tell you the the Murphy family is well known in the area I happened to be at Madonna this week um the show didn't even start until 10 o'clock I wasn't I got home at 3 o'clock in the morning I was like don't you know your audience but wal's there waiting for her to go on we start talking and these girls I I'm from falus oh okay I was like all right well who do do you know Ted Murphy of course I know Ted Murphy I'm friends with this one this one blah blah blah blah whatever so it was just one of those connecting points of bouth we like trying to figure out how old you are what year you graduated who do you know and then she said she was at beans's um High School reunion she graduated with beevans and I was like oh you're at the Le side I'm friends with all the guys for the kog Republic absolutely it's just a small world on the cave yeah but but what's great about you and a lot of my friends is ask questions everyone's connected if you ask like five questions and then you realize oh my gosh I know this person that person Degrees of Separation on the C yeah we don't do enough of that in the you know no but that was the that was the Madonna connection we had the music connection to the same memories of of the 80s it was just it was really cool and I love that you're writing about it so yeah it's not I'll just stranger things yeah yeah so true um just to give a shout out to my buddy mark Penta I was just talking to him the other day um there was a candy shop we used to go to everything under the sun yeah uh right right near the casino and that's actually gonna play a part in my book I think my husband asked you right away he like is the candy shop gonna be in there and you're like of course it is well I'm talk talking to Penta and he's like you're never gonna guess what I'm designing right now sure enough he's Des he was drawing a um picture of the candy shop was this after Cliff had asked you if the candy shop was in it this is wild and he's going to put that out as like a a poster type of thing and sell that so look thea.com check that out oh Ashley who can give Stephanie the most Hearts here you're so cute I moved from bment to Florida not knowing anyone here and it turned out my neighbor's name is Daniel and he was born in fth oh my God it's always the way you will always find a c kid somewhere in your life it's it's so true so true I don't know what it is about here but I love that people are connected to your book yeah and and feel very nostalgic and then as you can see here we're not at Sandy Point we've recreated it here with the Cog Republic um Ryan is here Ryan you want to swing over and talk to us a little bit about what's going on with the coh hog make a little room for you I'm gonna share my microphone with you I know swing over hi hey do you want me to hold it or you got it okay I'll I'll share Ted's I'll talk into Ted's chest hey so yeah right so talk to me about what's going on over at the coha because I feel like every time I blink you're growing yeah um we're that's the goal uh we're about to kick off February uh mug Club down in Falmouth oh go oh gosh yeah that's a lot that's work I've done it I've been my club members for years but uh I'm passing it the torch those full mug uh curls you know it's really good cardio it's a great way to um undo the positive effects of dry January dry January is bad for business you know we we got keep the busy a shortest month you've got great wings and great egg rolls always yes yeah uh the chefs are so talented um we really strive to be like a fun bar and have great food so hitting the Best of Both Worlds there talk about like your products though where can you find for sure um so we're all over Cape Cod most of your local independent markets are carrying some capacity to Cog Republic Cape Cod Market Ado because 2024 is going to be a big year for all of us yeah do you still do the Shipwreck Tre oh yeah yeah oh I love that oh yeah Tuesday night that's one of our later trivia so if you get out of work a little bit later you can swing through and they serve food a little bit later I know this time of year finding food past 8:00 pm is a challenge it really is yeah it's annoying yeah I don't know why everyone's like everyone we're closing at 8 tell everybody tell all your friends at least you can get food there till like 8:39 yeah because we've had the problem of like driving around town and me like oh this place and they're close you know so yeah hungry and it's so comfy at at shipwreck I know with the fire there um but um what else was they and they do amazing philanthropic things as well I feel like that that is why if you're ever in need or you ever need something you guys are doing belonging together you've got a PO plunge that's coming up yeah they're going to do that February 25th I know a lot of cold um cold plunger friends of mine were what asking me what time I'm like I don't know I believe it's 12 o'clock February 25th because I I I like to dress in theme I'll I'll leave it at that and I like to go in with Mo Cheeks you are not going to miss this amazingness you will see it all over social media even if you're not physically there I'm telling you you're gonna want to be there but yeah they they raise money for belonging to each other which I believe is trying to acquire a an actual building usually they rent a a house for the homeless people for the winter they they're trying to buy a building in town and anding and they really they lift up people and get them back into the workforce yeah you got to do that yep you know so I'm very excited for 2024 thank you for being my first guest on back at knockabout make sure you follow knockabout because they have got a lot going on between here and their other location in the mash Commons coming up in the spring we've got some big things and uh if you're any of our makers and you're looking to have maybe a popup here at the brewery we can make that happen we're going to be doing those the first Sunday of every month so we'll have one one or two little makers in here and it you know it's warm it's you can just get your teeth cut weighed into solar preneurship entrepreneurship and see if your product has some legs which I really like that baby step yeah honestly unveiling the cover last year was the first thing I did for this book and yeah I've been writing kids books for 20s something years I was petrified with this because as a grown up you're putting yourself out there and you're like what if they don't like me but the wonderful thing was you you just helped me through that whole transition and then you were soaring all of a sudden I'm like where is he not this book is out there yeah so and and that's because of all you guys passing the word on um don't share the book tell your friend to buy the yes exactly you support your local authors financially as well this is not one you swap yeah I I'll leave it at this this woman I met at at Stop and Shop and she was like I love the book I'm
